If you’re running Lion and using both Witch and TotalFinder, you may (will?) see duplicated entries for TotalFinder windows in the Witch switcher panel. If that’s the case, you can try this method to fix the problem:
- Disable Witch (uncheck Enable Witch) and quit the app (App Store version) or close System Preferences (independent version)
- Open Terminal (in Applications > Utilities), copy and paste the following text, then press Return:
defaults write ~/Library/Application\ Support/Witch/Settings "Work Around TotalFinder (Lion or Newer)" -bool YES
(That’s one long line; just select it and copy, and it should paste fine.) You won’t see any response from Terminal (other than a new command prompt), but Witch is now set up to work properly with TotalFinder. - Restart Witch.
If you’re running Witch in a pre-Lion Mac OS X with TotalFinder, use this solution instead.
Is it only me that it’s not working?
I’m running with the combination of OSX Lion 10.7.1, TotalFinder 1.2.5, and Witch 3.7 (3151).
I’ve tried this trick in a lot of ways and the switcher window still shows duplicated Finder window lists…

You are not the only one. The old solution worked fine for me under Leopard but sadly in OS X 10.7 duplicate windows still show up after applying the new fix.
Is it only me or is anyone else having problems whereby using Witch simply doesn’t show the HUD at all? Items will still switch, I just can’t see what I’m selecting. The only way to make this stop is to open Witch then close it. From then until I close my laptop, it works as it should.
Make sure Witch isn’t hidden in your Login Items panel.

not working for me either.
10.7.1, Witch 3.7 (3151/3195, TF 1.2.5
although I can see the workaround entry in the Settings.plist
:(
only witchdaemon is in my login items and no it’s not hidden.
Nope, not working, even after a reboot.
Witch 3.7
Totalfinder 1.2.5
OS X 10.7.1
Still not working with Totalfinder 1.3
Any ideas? It’s quite annoying…
Sorry for any confusion: we’re waiting on an update for TotalFinder; this isn’t something that we can fix ourselves. The workaround in this hint was seemingly working for some folks, but perhaps not.
Another Witch user contacted Binary Age (TotalFinder’s developers), with some information we provided on the source of the problem, and got this in return:
“I understand thanks for forwarding their explanation. It should be
pretty easy for me to fix it.
Expect a fix in some future release. But first I have to fix all
stability issues and quirks in Lion version.”
So, at some point, there should be a TotalFinder update that solves this problem. Until that happens, though, we can’t do anything with Witch to make it work better.
